What Collegiate YF&R Has Planned

The fall semester has begun at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and Collegiate Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) has resumed meeting as well. Their first meeting was held on Wednesday, August 29thin the Fleischmann Agriculture Building Room 219 at 5:30 p.m. The club discussed the upcoming events for the semester including club fairs, field days, and a potential advocacy event on campus.

President Blane Merkley called the meeting to order and quickly began discussing recruiting new members and incoming freshman at the upcoming UNR Club Fair. The club goal was to have Moolisa the Nevada Department of Agriculture dairy cow and have a cow mascot to bring attention to the booth.

Another great event Collegiate YF&R has planned is the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR) Field Day held at the University Main Station Farm. This event will be held September 8th, from 9 am to 3 pm. This will be great event for people to stop by and learn what Collegiate YF&R is all about and all the great advocacy events we have planned for the future semester.

From the great success of “Floats and Goats” this past spring semester, the collegiate club hopes to bring “What’s Your BEEF With DAIRY?” For the next advocacy event on campus. With this event we hope to bring awareness to the differences between the beef industry and dairy industry. The setup will be two separate tables near each other with their own information pamphlets. To bring extra attention to the booth, the club anticipates bringing a beef calf and a dairy calf on campus. This project is still in the works, but the club is excited to push forward with the idea.

The collegiate club also received a very generous donation from Stanislaus Farm Supply in Yerington. A brand-new saddle was donated to the collegiate club and raffle tickets are now being sold. For one ticket the price is $10, or you can buy 6 tickets for $50. All proceeds help fund events for Collegiate YF&R if interested please contact Brieanna Valdez at (775)-934-9078, or brieanna@nvfb.org.

The next collegiate club meeting will be held Thursday September 13that 5:30 pm.
