Nevada Farm Bureau Women Represent Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

Nevada Farm Bureau is proud to recognize three outstanding leaders who represented Nevada agriculture at the American Farm Bureau Federation Women’s Leadership ACE Summit in Washington, D.C.

Representing Nevada were Cindy Hardy, Chair of the Nevada Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee and member of Clark County Farm Bureau; Mary Jane Zakas, Vice Chair of the Women’s Leadership Committee and member of Central Nevada Farm Bureau; and Janille Baker of White Pine County Farm Bureau.

As part of the summit, the group spent time on Capitol Hill meeting directly with Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, as well as representatives from Congressman Steven Horsford’s office. The delegation discussed key issues affecting Nevada agriculture, including the Farm Bill, agricultural labor reform, immigration policy, and challenges facing rural communities.

“We received more attention from both senators than I have ever experienced or expected,” shared Janille Baker. “They gave us ample time to discuss nearly every issue we wanted to bring forward. Their staff members were knowledgeable and willing to follow up on topics that required additional research. Both offices expressed support for advancing the Farm Bill and addressing agricultural labor reform.”

Janille also noted that Senator Cortez Masto’s office indicated there may be opportunities for progress on immigration reform, calling it one of the best chances in years to move meaningful legislation forward.

In addition to advocacy efforts, attendees heard inspiring stories from women leaders around the world. Speakers from Chile, Germany, Wales, South Africa, and Sweden shared their experiences in agriculture and leadership. One particularly impactful presentation came from entrepreneur Sarah Frey, who spoke about taking over her family’s farm as a teenager and transforming it into a highly successful agricultural business.

“I really enjoyed our visits with the senators and Congressman Horsford’s staff,” said Cindy Hardy. “Another part of the summit I enjoyed was hearing from women from around the world share their stories and experiences. It was a great conference, and we enjoyed meeting women involved in agriculture from across the country.”

The ACE Summit provided valuable opportunities for learning, networking, and advocacy while highlighting the important role women play in agriculture around the globe. Nevada Farm Bureau thanks Cindy, Mary Jane, and Janille for their leadership, dedication, and commitment to ensuring Nevada agriculture continues to have a strong voice at both the state and national levels.
